For the last three years, I've been able to watch this little herd of mares change and grow, thanks to my friend Jackie! It's been a really fun experience learning and capturing their quirks and personalities, and also how they interact with each other.
My photography career began with horses, and I don't think I'll ever give up on capturing their spirit. Being around horses brings out something in myself, and it's always different depending on the horse, and I love being able to transfer that into a creative way with photography.
Shady is a 27 year old, chestnut, Arabian mare, but don't let her age fool you. I've had the opportunity to ride this mare many times, and she hasn't lost her spunk! She is the leader of the herd, and incredibly well trained (way to go, Jackie!), with a sweet and sassy personality. She's pretty much a sour patch kid!
Pepper is around 2 years old (I think), and is a big, beefy Quarter Horse. SHE WON'T STOP GROWING! Pepper was a really tough horse to be around when Jackie first got her, because she'd like to run at people, squealing and bucking. She made us all a little uneasy. Since then, she's been sent off to training and it's like being around a whole new horse! She's very sweet, and lazy, and loves having her belly scratched!
Lettie is a Norwegian Fjord, and is the newest and youngest member of the herd! I got to meet Lettie shortly after she was born, and she was the tiniest, fluffiest little thing! Fjord's have wonderful temperaments, so it's no surprise that she's still super snuggly and level headed. Her trademark mane and solid neck muscles have filled out considerably, and she's just a ham of a horse!
I'm so thankful to have been able to photograph these mares and get to know them over the years! Jackie, I'm really looking forward to this summer with you and your mares!
