My Secret

July 23, 2018

The last month has been a whirlwind, between losing my horse, buying a new house, and booking more clients than I ever have before. On top of it, I'm back in the wedding game, which I'm incredibly excited about!

I stuck to horses and nature for a while, because it was safe. It was easier photographing flowers than it was photographing people. It was easier for me to tell myself that I sucked at photographing people, rather than actually giving it my all and seeing what I was capable of. I was afraid to fail, to take a photo that someone might not like. It took a lot to get out of my own way, and I'm so glad I did.

Photography is not just my business, it's one of my main purposes in life. If you've seen me work behind the camera, you've noticed I'm kind of like a ninja. I try to be everywhere, running around with my backpack and harness holding two heavy cameras. I have to make sure I'm wearing extra deodorant in hopes to hide the sweating (ew). Most of the time, I end up getting filthy because I've either been lying on the ground, standing in rivers, or climbing rocks. As most photographers will tell you, we don't just stand there.

After all of that and a ten hour wedding, no matter how late it is, I'll come home and you'll find me editing immediately. My husband will say, "honey, come to bed." And I'll say, "five more minutes." I'm excited about the job I just did and the people I was able to work with, and I can't wait to begin editing! Next to actually shooting, it's my favorite part. It's where I truly get to create and enhance the emotion of each photograph. I will spend upwards of 45 hours editing one wedding, and I still have managed to deliver a complete gallery in just under four weeks. I don't rush, in fact, I've found a really great balance that works for me. I make sure to purposefully carve out time for myself, my family, and other important personal events, and factor in time for work. It is possible, I promise.

I also know how hard it is to wait for something like photos. My clients are excited and can't wait to relive moments from their big day - I totally get it. I take my time with each photograph, but I don't dilly dally. I'm equally as excited for my clients and even though I work a separate full-time job on top of running my photography business, I still believe in delivering beautiful photos in a timely manner.

My secret?

I'm blissfully in love with what I do.

I prioritize my weeks accordingly, I love my clients dearly, and I love that this pursuit gives me an outlet to connect with people, create, and capture some of life's most fleeting moments. I've been chasing this dream since I was fifteen years old and I finally feel like I'm becoming the photographer I've always dreamed of becoming. I've grown so much in my style and skill in just the last year and I'm excited for more opportunities to develop.

Thanks for being with me on this journey! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! I'd love to help any way I can!
